Introduction and timeline
It is being funded with £19.8m from the Government’s national Levelling-Up Fund. When it opens in 2024, the building will offer a sports hall, gym, café, library, community space and 25-metre swimming pool. It will be one of the biggest single investments in West Denton for many years and offer the community lots of new opportunities for sport, recreation, and social activities. Subject to planning approval, work is expected to start on the centre in the winter of 2022, and open in spring 2024.

What we are doing to hear people's views
We want to hear what local people and community groups think about our plans for the leisure centre, so we are holding events to discuss it, and we have an online survey. We will also be meeting with local groups, and will be posting information about the proposals for the centre to local people as well (the flyer we are posting is attached here: West Denton Leisure Centre Flyer). You can give us your views by coming to this event on Monday 24th January at 10am.

]]> 2022-03-02T12:46:02+00:00 <![CDATA[Improvements to Fawdon Park 2022]]> https://staging.letstalknewcastle.co.uk/164 We are looking at some possible improvements to Fawdon Park, and we want to hear what local people and community groups think about our plans, so we are holding a public consultation session at Fawdon Community Centre on Thursday 3 March from 2-6pm regarding future improvements to Fawdon Park. The session will provide the opportunity for local residents to view some early design ideas and give feedback as well as provide some ideas of their own.
For anyone attending we would encourage you to wear a face covering in enclosed spaces (unless you have an exemption), and taking a lateral flow test before attending. We would also ask anyone who is feeling unwell or in receipt of a positive lateral flow or PCR test not to attend. We look forward to speaking to you.

We have teamed with up Rob Charman, owner of awarding winning Red Beard Tours, to deliver some insightful walking tours around the east end of Newcastle.
What's happening
For those living in the Inner East area of the city, why not come along on Wednesday 14 September or Saturday 17 September 2022 from 10am and learn some fascinating historical facts, leading up to the present day. You will also have an opportunity to give us your thoughts about your area, to help shape and create the future of your local high streets.
As a thank you to all those involved, a delicious brunch will be waiting for you at the end of the tour!  During the brunch, some of the project team will be on hand to tell you more about this exciting project to help shape and create inclusive, healthy, and vibrant high streets.

The new North East Mayoral Combined Authority, which would cover an area which is home to around 2 million people, will have the power to make decisions on areas such as transport, skills, housing, finance and economic development. The deal includes:
  • An investment fund of £1.4bn, or £48m a year, to support inclusive economic growth and support our regeneration priorities
  • An indicative budget of around £1.8bn, or £60m a year, for adult education and skills – to meet local skills priorities and improve opportunities for residents
  • A £900m package of investment to transform our transport system, with £563m from the City Regional Sustainable Transport Fund, on top of funding already announced for our buses and metro system
  • £69m of investment in housing and regeneration, unlocking sites to bring forward new housing and commercial development
Local leaders have worked together to negotiate an offer which matches their ambition to make a difference for residents, communities and the economy.

The councils involved (County Durham, Gateshead, Newcastle, Northumberland, North Tyneside, South Tyneside and Sunderland) have published a scheme under the Local Democracy, Economic Development and Construction Act 2009. Currently, Newcastle City Council, North Tyneside Council and Northumberland County Council are members of NTCA while Durham County Council, Gateshead Council, South Tyneside Council and Sunderland City Council are members of NECA.

A drop-in session will be held at the junction of Hadrian Road, Sutherland Avenue, and Hoyle Avenue on Thursday 12th September at 3-6pm. We would like to:
  • Find out how people currently use this green space
  • Speak to residents who might want to get more involved in the scheme
  • Discuss the designs, including placement of trees and bulb planting
  • Discuss ideas on how to improve biodiversity and wildlife habitats

  • Monday 29th January, 9:30am – 12pm, One Strawberry Lane  

These will be fun, creative sessions with activities. Light refreshments will be provided. Access guides and plans for each of the sessions emailed or posted to you two weeks before your session.

A bit more about what we're planning to do


This plan for working together will help when we are: 
  • changing how services we offer are delivered  
  • designing new services or plans for how we work 
  • looking at offering new contracts to companies and organisations who provide services on our behalf or hiring new staff members  

Anyone with an interest in Adult Social Care in Newcastle is welcome to join us. This includes:    
  • people who live in Newcastle who use our services, their friends, family and carers   
  • anyone working for care providers commissioned by the council   
  • council staff 
  • people working for or using voluntary and community organisations
